2012 horror film, 'In Fear'

On friday 25th of November a film crew knocked at my house saying that they were going to be filming a new 2012 horror film in the woods next to where I live. The film was a low budget movie and didnt have many people working on it. The story was, that a couple were driving for a romantic getaway, but loads of strange things start to happen and they find out that there actually  being stalked by something.

The scene that I got to see, was where the couples car comes to a stop and a huge tree falls down in front of them. To make the trees fall, they had it attached to some wire which then led to some form of tracter hidden in the woods about 40ft away. All of the production people knew that this tree was going to fall, but the actors knew nothing of it. This was the way the director wanted to ge the best natural reaction, but if that didnt go to plan they would spend the rest of the day filming in the car, there reactions, since they would have captured the tree falling.

The person I spoke said that I wasnt allowed to take photos or film anything going on, but she let me take one photo as they were getting everything ready for the shot.

This is where the shot was filmed, the couples car is just behind the land rover. So what had happend was, the couples car drive down here, come to a stop then suddenly a huge tree will fall down in front of the car. I think its amazing that they arrived here at 4am and are planning to leave at 5pm just to get a few minuites of footage. The film is actually based in Ireland but they like this location for a shot. The lady I was speaing to said that this film may not get released in the cinema it depends. The production team that are on set have helped in Simen Pegs films. And the women I spoke to has been in ceveral big movies, 'Centurian', and has worked with Brad Pitt.

This image I took secretly before I entered the woods from the top of my field. I think It could be the couples car, im not sure though.

Understand the suitability of materials, techniques and processes

The website I'm going to use for research is http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/07/09/textures-and-patterns-design-showcase/.
I'm using this website because I like the attention to detail they give about textures and patterns. They talk about how textures and patterns are used more often than we think, we just don't notice them. Here is something written about textures on there website...

Textures and patterns are used more often than one may think. The reason why we don’t see them is because they usually remain in the background, supporting the overall design, replacing a standard background color and creating a more inviting atmosphere. But they almost never stand out. Used primarily for background images, they need to fit to the overall design making the content easier to perceive. In fact, wood textures seem to have become so popular that designers suggest that wood is the new glossy style and wood is the new white.

Here is a screenshot of there website, here it is showing you how to create a tile or pattern.

This part is showing you how patterns and styles are used in web pages, but we rarely notice them because there usually the background.

Nick Park

Nick park is a film maker for stop motion animation, best known for the making of wallace and grommit, shaun the sheep. 'A grand day out' was the first of the wallace and grommit films, where wallace builds a rocket in his garage and flys to the moon. With 'A gtand day out' in post production, he made 'creature comforts' as his contribution to a series of shorts called 'lip synch'. Creature comforts matched animated zoo animals with a soundtrack of people talking about there homes. The two films were for a host of awards.

Two more wallace and grommit films were later produced, 'The Wrong Trousers' and 'A Close Shave' both of these winning oscar's. He then made his first feature length film, 'Chicken Run', 2000. He also supervised a new series of 'creature comforts' for television in 2003.

His second feature length film was 'wallace and Grommit, curse of the were-rabbit', which was released 5 october 2005. Later won best animated feature Oscar at the 78th academy awards in 2006.

This is a really good website, it shows how games are made, drawn, animated and more. It shows images used from games and shows the design process for them also along with the artist and about he/she. It offers tutorials on how to do things also at a price.

Firstly I made a new document then on the background layer I went to filter - render - difference clouds and did that several times until I found one I liked.
then I applied a gradient map on the image to make it a different colour as shown as above.
Then I applied a radial blur.
Then, I made a new text layer and wrote kaboom.
Then I applied some blending options to make the writing look a little more 3d.

Here is an animation I made using tweens in photoshop. The screenshots above show how I made it.

David Carson
David Carson is an American graphic designer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun. Carson was perhaps the most influential graphic designer of the 1990's.

He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954. Carsons first contact as with graphic design was made in 1980 at the university of Arizona on a two week graphics course. He attended San Diego State University as well as oregon College of commercial art. Later he was teaching high school sociology in del mar california when he went to switzerland, where he attended a three-week workshop in graphic design as part of his degree.

He became renowned for his inventive graphics in the 1990s. HE art directed various music, skateboarding, snowboarding, surfer, beach culture and the music magazine Ray Gun. As art director of Ray Gun, carson came to worldwide attension. In a feature story, NEWSWEEK magazine said he "changed the public face of graphic design"

This is one of my favourite banksy images because, I think to make the image lead somewhere else like this one does is a really clever idea. It gives you a sense that there something behind the painting, making the whole image seem real and stand out more. I love the idea the women makes the wall look like a blanket or sheet by pulling it up like that. The technique banksy has used here is the stencil look, but most of the effect of the image comes from the pulling up of the sheet.

This is also one of my favourite banksy images. I think the message that this picture is trying to show is, someone rioting, but whenever we see riots on TV, its always really violent. But with this image, instead of the man throwing a brick or whatever... he is throwing flowers. This may represent peace, maybe there rioting for peace. I think when bansky does his work, he tries to put a message into each image.

Banksy Film
I found the film about banksy and other street artists really interesting. I thought that Mr Brainwash was sort of doing what he did for the money and the fame, where as someone like Banksy was doing it because he enjoyed it, he wasn't doing it for money and fame, he didn't care about that and continue's to keep his identity hidden from people. I also think that Mr Brainwash pushed away all the other street artists after he became famous and had loads of money. Because in the beginning he was the one chasing up the street artists, filming everything they do and without them, he wouldn't of become so famous and have loads of money. It almost feels like after watching that film that he has become more successful than they have in a space of half a year whereas they have spent years doing there street art. I really enjoyed watching banksy's lifestyle and what he does to get his images noticed by people and the effort he puts in, but does it because he truly enjoys what he's doing.

These are some graffiti tags I started coming up with.

Here is the final tag which I've developed in photoshop. was quite simple to do, just used a circle shape along with the text tool to make the bubble writing and a brush tool to make the drips, then filled it in with the paint bucket.

Here is some images of the park, these are'nt my images because I was ill on that day.

This is an image I put together using the images of the park using photoshop. took me around half an hour using various selection tools, hue and saturation.

[AndyBuck-PENCIL-ART-10.jpg]

I think the attention to detail in this image is incredible, I really like how he has focused on the eye closest and made everything else seem blurry. The matierials used here i would say is a rubber, pencil, grafite. he would probably of started by puttign down a basic shade with some basic outlines, then slowly make his way around the drawing.

This is an image that has been produced on photoshop, but painted from scratch using the brush tool. The artist that drew this is called Nico Di Mattia, he made this image for pixar for promotion of there new film. The process he would've done to make this image would be to start with a sketch of a rough idea on a separate layer maybe above everything so he can turn it on off to reveal it. The tools used would be a brush tool with low opacities and maybe some pen pressure settings enabled. The smudge tool may be used in several places along with the mixer brush. I think the attension to detail in the image is amazing if you compare it with actual images from the film, the characters look identical.

For my own choice of work I've chosen a game that's just been released called 'battlefield 3'. The reason I chose this is because I think the game is visually amazing, the attention to detail in the game is incredible. As you can see in this screenshot of the trailer (which is actual footage) that the character on the left is being made the target of the image. You can see this because the game is using depth of field for the things in the background and then motion blur on his hand as he moves it.

Here is a good example of the lighting used in the game, as you can see the lighting on the left from the sign is displaying a reflection on the floor where your running, which also shows that there is water on the floor. The lights from the buildings in the background are also reflecting on the ground. The producers of the game had to make the game seem real, and to do that you've got make it look real.

Here is an image I painted in photoshop. It took around 5 - 6 hours to complete. The tools I used to make this were: the brush tool, with different opacties and pen pressures, mixer brush, smudge tool, eraser, dodge and burn, gaussian blur and at serveral stages I made my own brushes. While I was painting this image I was screen recording it at the same time, which now I have speeded it up and put it on youtube, the link is below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR32Ut_rwHs The video did'nt come out very well and I'm not sure why, the recordings came out fine, but I think when I put them together and edited them something went wrong.

These are some graffiti tags I started coming up with after watching the banksy film.

Here is the final tag which I've developed in photoshop. was quite simple to do, just used a circle shape along with the text tool to make the bubble writing and a brush tool to make the drips, then filled it in with the paint bucket.

First off I used the pen tool to select the area I wanted to write in then, took the text tool and click in the area and started typing. once I had typed what I wanted I then had to rasterize the layer. Then I used the free transform tool and warp tool to get everything at the right angle and shape.

here i have applied a sphere effect over the text on the face to make it look slightly round, also i have added things onto the hair.
Here is the end result, i have duplicated some areas over the top of each other to give it some shading then used some free transform and warp tool to get everything lined up.

These are patterns i've made using a cabbage and the letter 's'. to do this i changed the colour of the cabbage by going into hue and saturation, then applied a text layer over the top. Then i flattened the image and put it into a new document and copied loads of the same layer to align them to make it look like a pattern.

Below are some rubbing's me and some friends made from textures found around the college:

This is a pattern i've made using one of the rubbings.

Archan Nair

Archan Nair is a self developed visual artist, illustrator and art director. All of his work are very bright and full of colour. In his work he uses photo's and then adds loads of things onto those images to make them stand out a lot more and bring them to life in a way.

Here is an image i made in photoshop. All i've done is get an image of a city street, applied cracked concrete textures on the ground and buildings. used the burn tool on some of the buildings, i've applied a grassy texture to the ground aswell, along with a different sky a few blacked out windows then finally used a colour variation after i had flattened the document.

Here I got the image I wanted, Then I clicked on edit in quick mask mode and started selecting the place I wanted selecting with the brush tool.
Once selected, I went to select then inverse.
Then I went into refine edge, and painted the area that was white with a black and it then removes the background.
Here you can see the background has been removed  and kept the made sure the hair is still a pretty good quality.
Then here I just applied a gradient layer behind everything.

Here is my storyboard, my idea is that I'm going to have a grenade rolling on the floor with a ticking noise, it then blows up and says 'Kaboom'  then the dust will settle and disappear and it will then say' innovation in art and design'.

Drawing Process
Below are screenshots of the process I have gone through to draw an eye in photoshop. Took around 2 - 3 hours.
Firstly I sketch out an outline in a bright colour then made that the layer above everything. Once done I created a layer below it called face, then one below that called background. I roughly put in some lighting on the face and a block colour. For the background I painted in a few shades then used gaussian blur to make it look like the depth of field you get in photos.

Here Iv made the wrinkle above the eye a little more darker giving it depth. I've also put detail into the tear duct and put shading the whites of the eye and blocked in the pupil on a seperate layer above the face.
Here I selected the eye layer to make sure I dont paint out of it. I used the bun tool around the edge of the eye and started painting in all the details.
Here I've added a highlight on another layer.

Here I've started putting in the hair and eyebrow, both on different layers.

Here I've started putting in the eyelashes using a brush tool and a smudge tool.
